« Cops slur Gerry as 'negligent'

    COMMENT ON THIS STORY

A PORTUGUESE prosecutor launched an astonishing attack on Gerry McCann accusing him of being a 'negligent' father.
Carlos Anjos, president of the Judicial Police Inspectors Union, slammed Gerry because he suggested his daughter may have been abducted by a someone hiding in their apartment when he went to check on his three children.
Mr Anjos said: "Four months after his daughter disappeared, during which time he was interviewed several times by the Judicial Police, he remembers that there was a man hiding in the apartment where his three children were sleeping, when he went to check they were okay.
"If he thought there was a man in the apartment and he went off calmly to dinner, his negligence as a father has no possible classification."
Mr Anjos also accused the McCanns of feeding regular stories to the media in order to distract the investigation.
"Since their daughter disappeared, Gerry and Kate have followed a strategy of almost daily announcements of new facts designed to distract and confuse the investigation."
The comments are sure to anger the McCanns as the investigation into their missing daughter continues to produce little or no hard evidence.
The Journal de Noticias newspaper also reports Gerry and Kate could face accusations of faking their daughter's abduction.
They could be jailed for up to one year under article 366 of Portugal's penal code if they are found guilty of falsely reported a crime.
Tests on hair found in the McCann's holiday apartment could hold the key to the investigation into Madeleine's disappearance, Portuguese police believe.
The hair - thought to belong to Maddie - was found down the back of the sofa and could show whether or not she was drugged.
Scientists in Birmingham are testing the hairs for a DNA match and toxicology tests, according to Portuguese paper Jornal de Noticias.
Meanwhile it has been reported that the McCann’s lawyers are trying to find some way round the legislation that prevents them from talking about the case.
Kate and Gerry McCann had to decline an interview with US presenter Barbara Walters in their bid to keep the search for Maddie in the spotlight.
Yesterday the McCanns faced fresh slurs as it was claimed Portuguese cops think Maddie died after a fall downstairs at their holiday flat.
A senior police source said they were “100 per cent certain” she tumbled down ten steps to the first floor apartment, banging her head.
He added: “The only thing to investigate is how the body disappeared.”
According to the leaked theory — said to be based on British forensic tests — Kate and Gerry hid the body with the aid of friends to cover up the fact Maddie was sedated.
But McCann spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “It is ludicrous. Leaks appear on a daily basis. It’s hurtful.”
A family friend added: “Where is the proof? How can you tell what anyone died of without a body?”
In another development yesterday, it was claimed a former maid at the Praia da Luz holiday complex may have abducted Maddie in revenge for being sacked. »
